ALECTIA restores Natura 2000 area

Kastbjerg Ådal is a unique natural habitat. ALECTIA is consulting on a project that will ensure a favourable conservation status for the area's valuable natural landscape.

ALECTIA is currently working on a major nature restoration project in Kastbjerg River Valley, comprising 535 ha. The river valley lies on the southern side of Mariager Fjord and is a designated Natura 2000 area based on the EU’s Habitat Directive (Habitat area no. 223). The area has been designated to protect a wide range of species and natural area types such as the otter, great crested newt, rich fens and springs.

The project is to ensure and restore a cohesive open landscape through the river valley. The designated foundation for the habitat comprises a large number of rich fens. The areas are severely threatened by overgrowing, nutrient supply and lack of care. These rich fens are therefore the highest priority within the project area. Secondly, the nature restoration is to ensure that the streams are in a better physical state and thereby of greater biological value.

ALECTIA is in the process of preparing the data for the area, so that the hydrological conditions can be described in the best way possible. This is an important preamble to describing the measures that are required to improve conditions in the area. Another important part is to plan a sensible nature care strategy, which will help ensure that the Kastbjerg River Valley will also be one of Denmark's finest natural habitats in the future.

ALECTIA will be running the project until autumn 2010.
