Denmark's fastest super computer ready at DTU

On October 22 2009, DTU (the Technical University of Denmark) inaugurated their new super computer, called Niflheim. ALECTIA has expert knowledge of server rooms, and has advised on the design of installations, including cooling, electricity and safety appliances.

The most potent computer in Denmark is now located at the Technical University of Denmark. The Niflheim computer can handle more than 45 billion (45.000.000.000.000) operations a second, and is designed to be used for the technology of the future, sustainable energy supply. The new super computer requires a permanently cooled server room to avoid overheating. ALECTIA has helped make this possible.

In November 2010, the top 500 of the world’s most powerful super computers will be published, and DTU expects that Denmark and Niflheim will be on the list this time.

DTU and ALECTIA have worked together for many years
For decades ALECTIA has been advising DTU, and the cooperation actually goes back to the 1960’ies, when DTU was establised.

The cooperation has among other things resulted in exiting projects involving renovations, new building, and operational tasks, including the creation of the “Centre for Electron Nanoscopy”, which is considered to be the world’s best microscope facility, and the clean room facilities at MIC and Danchip (national centres for micro- and nanotechnology).

ALECTIA has furthermore given advice on the construction of the new central cooling system of the university, which has optimised operations and the reliability of supplies. The new central cooling system also services the new server room, and ensures that the super computer can function optimally with the right temperature at all times.
