Energy-efficient water supplies
ALECTIA participates in a project supported by DANVA (Danish Water and Wastewater Association) together with Grundfos, the DHI Group and Birkerød Municipal Waterworks. The project has shown that it will be possible to save energy on a national basis corresponding to the discharge of at least 11,000 tonnes of CO2 a year by making the pumping stations and operations of Danish well fields more efficient.
Former Minister for the Environment Troels Lund Poulsen visited Birkerød Water Supply together with two Parliament colleagues, Kristian Pihl Lorentzen and Sophie Løhde Jacobsen, to hear more about a project that has shown that there is much to be gained by looking more closely at the energy consumption of the Danish water supply sector.
The Birkerød Municipal Waterworks has worked together with Grundfos, ALECTIA, and the DHI Group on an energy optimization project in relation to the water catchment of the waterworks. And the minister was positive:

"I am very happy to see an example of how new technology can help us use less energy and reduce the environmental impact In general, the Danish water supply companies have a big potential for optimizing and utilizing new technologies to reduce their energy consumption. If Danish companies come up with good solutions, we might even be able to export these solutions”.
Calculations show that if all waterworks became just as energy-efficient as the Birkerød Waterworks, it would be possible to save as much as 11 % of the yearly energy consumption of the water supply companies, corresponding to 22 million kWh a year.
The project in Birkerød would have a total payback period of approx. three years, if all pumps were replaced at the same time. The profit realized by replacing pumps varies, but in the case of some of the pumps in Birkerød, the payback time would be as short as 1½ years.
The project
The official name of the project is ”Energy optimizing of well fields”, and has been a cooperation between Grundfos, Birkerød Municipal Waterworks, the DHI group and ALECTIA. The project is supported by DANVA.
Facts
- Savings for the Birkerød Municipal Waterworks: Up to 28 % of the yearly energy consumption for ground water catchment.
- On a national level, the expected savings would be approx. 11 %. This corresponds to approx. 22 million kWh a year.
- The discharge of CO2 is reduced by 11,000 tonnes a year.
