Louisiana builds energy-friendly storage facility

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art will get its much-awaited wish of a state-of-the-art storage facility of 2,000 m2 for safekeeping of the museum’s works of art. Since 1995, ALECTIA has been trusted consultants of Louisiana and is now advising on the storage facility. It will be constructed in accordance with a concept for passive air conditioning of storage rooms, setting the future standard for energy-friendly storing of works of art.

Louisiana’s new storage facility will be situated in Humlebæk, not far from the museum, on a recently purchased site, and will ensure the proper preservation of the growing number of works of art with regard to both storage and security.

The new 2,000 m2 art storage facility, which will cost 26.9 million DKK, will solve the storage problems of Louisiana for many years ahead, and the museum will regain control of its own works of art, which have up to now been stored in many different places. The building will get the same security class as the museum itself.

The latest development within storage rooms
The storage facility will be constructed according to the ZEPHYR method, a concept for passive air conditioning of storage rooms developed by ALECTIA in co-operation with Lund University in Sweden and the National Museum of Denmark. The method utilizes the physical properties of specific building materials to ensure a stable climate at very limited energy consumption to obtain optimal conditions for the works of art. The storage method is the latest development in art storing in the museum world.

The storage facility is a New Year’s gift to Louisiana of 26.9 million DKK, distributed with a third each from the foundations the VELUX FOUNDATION, the VILLUM FOUNDATION and the AUGUSTINUS FOUNDATION. The construction is expected to start in the summer of 2011 and to be ready in the beginning of 2012.
