The Energy Supply in Køge prepares for the future

The Energy Supply in Køge wants to be at the forefront of the development and prepare for the future. In cooperation with ALECTIA an analysis is carried out on how to adjust the water supply in relation to groundwater resources, water treatment and distribution so that the supply will become sustainable and have optimal operation.

At present, big changes are taking place within the water and wastewater sector in Denmark. As a result of the Water Sector Act, the former municipal supplies were separated as independent companies, and increased focus has been put on optimization and economy. To be able to realize the strategy and objectives, the Energy Supply in Køge and ALECTIA work out a long-term strategy analysis for the water supply.

Analysis of the future supply structure
The strategy analysis is based on key objectives and demands on supply security, environmental and resource considerations and guidelines for extending the supply structure. The analysis is worked out within the framework stipulated in the water supply plan, water plans and action plans, and at the same time it considers the water consumption development, a new super hospital, major changes of the city structure at the coast of Køge and a possible future supply for the surrounding areas.

To be able to cover the basis of the future supply, the existing conditions on well fields, in water treatment plants and in distribution systems are assessed. Moreover, the overall financial situation is assessed. On this basis, several scenarios for the future supply structure are outlined including the possibility of connecting supply areas, shutting down or building waterworks or water towers and the possibility of importing water.

Long-term water supply plan
The strategy analysis will lead to a long-term plan for a continuous extension and modernization of the water supply. The initiatives and investments necessary to realise the planned water supply are prioritized in terms of time, and financial analyses are carried out to find to optimal investment strategy taking into account tariffs and price cap.

Strategic tools
To ensure that the knowledge, which is gathered and built up during the project, is used in a systematic and transparent manner, the Energy Supply in Køge uses several tools developed by ALECTIA. The tools include a strategic budget tool that clarifies the relations between investments, price cap, tariffs, depreciations and liquidity.

The tools ensure that data and knowledge are available to the supply and that they can be used in the future as well.

ALECTIA has worked out similar strategy analyses for several Danish supply companies. We have learned that the plans provide clarity on the strategy and objectives of the supply and result in specific actions and initiatives. At the same time they are an efficient tool for clarifying the investment needs to the Board of the Supply.
