Dong Energy: Valuable recycling of waste

DONG.jpg

As part of the company's climate strategy, DONG Energy wants to increase waste recycling. The goal is a recycling percentage of at least 65 % in all Danish power stations by 2012.

As a consultant, ALECTIA has worked closely with DONG Energy Power to establish a registration system which makes it possible to collect and compare data across the organisation. Concrete improvements have been identified in connection with handling all types of waste, and organisational roles were defined as well as the responsibility for ensuring that these improvements are maintained and developed.

The sorting of waste at source and the paper recycling alone generate a profit of approximately DKK 500 per tonne of waste that is not sent to a landfill or an incinerator.

The results of this collaboration have been highly satisfactory, and the target has been more than met. The degree of recycling at the power plants has increased from 62% in 2008 to 67% in 2009, and the amount of waste that is sent for incineration has been reduced by 568 tonnes. DONG Energy estimates that this positive development will continue.
