ALECTIA is the main consultant on the construction of a completely new state-of-the-art factory for Topsil Semiconductor Materials in Frederikssund. The company has more than 50 years of experience in developing, producing and selling silicon wafers, which are used in for example wind generators and high-speed trains, and is the only one of its kind in Denmark.

Topsil Semiconductor Materials’ new factory is an approx. 5.000 m² high-tech construction processing approx. 185 tonnes of silicon every year. Besides the production facilities the new building includes offices, canteen, storage, cleansing rooms for laboratories, etc. The project is expected to be completed in 2012.

Many competences in play
After 50 years of production Topsil is now ready for the next step in the company development with brand-new facilities – and together with ALECTIA, Topsil has prepared and planned the future production. As the main consultant on the project, ALECTIA carries a large part of the responsibility for the fulfilment of Topsil’s requirements and wishes in connection with the new factory.

ALECTIA is in charge of the preparation of the construction programme, project proposal and main project. Furthermore, ALECTIA is responsible for tenders, contracting, construction management, supervision, project follow-up, hand-over, corrective actions, and a review one year after the completion of the building.

For this comprehensive building project, ALECTIA uses several cross-disciplinary competences to cover all the consulting tasks from A to Z.

• The building is built as flexibly as possible. For instance the number of supporting columns is kept to a minimum. Moreover, the building parts will be as maintainable and robust as possible to take into account the exposure to acid, which is used in the production. ALECTIA advises on electricity, sanitary installations and ventilation in the project as well.
  
  
• Process optimization – optimization of the actual production from start to end product and consultancy regarding the refrigeration solutions included in the project, for example a heat pump system and systems for free cooling and process cooling to keep the energy consumption at a low level.
  
  
• Sustainability: Topsil wants a sustainable factory. Therefore, ALECTIA has worked out solutions, where for instance surface water is infiltrated to avoid impacting the public sewerage system, and where the consumption of water is reduced by recycling of the water used for production.
• Working environment: Several occupational health and safety considerations are included in the production. For instance Topsil wants a production design that avoid heavy lifts. Moreover, there has to be sufficient space around the machines to give the employees appropriate working positions.
