User involvement and cross-disciplinary design

ALECTIA has designed a new high-tech sterilisation centre for Gentofte Hospital. The sterilisation centre will handle all washing and sterilisation of equipment from 4 operating theatres. Until now, each surgery unit has sterilised their own equipment with their own washing machines and autoclaves. However, the users of the hospital needed a more rational solution with a central unit responsible for washing and transporting of the equipment to and from the surgery units.
The sterilisation centre has been designed in close collaboration with a number of different staff groups at the hospital and ALECTIA consultants with qualifications in patient treatment, working environment and buildings. We have supplied a thorough analysis of the logistics and work procedures to ensure that the sterilisation centre meets the needs of the hospital. What kind of surgical operations that Gentofte Hospital will handle in the future has not yet been finally decided, and we have therefore made an estimate of the future capacity of the surgery unit and the flow of instruments that will pass through the sterilisation centre on a daily basis to ensure that the sterilisation centre can live up to future demands.
Priority area in the project
The development of the sterilisation centre has focused particularly on patient safety, logistics, working environment and efficient work procedures. The sterilisation centre naturally complies with all regulatory requirements and at the same time lives up to the newest standards for re-handling units in Denmark.
ALECTIA has gathered the strongest skills in the area and developed an integrated concept for the design of sterilisation centres. The concept ensures that representatives from for example management, IT, the surgery unit and the hygiene organisation are involved in an efficient way. By involving the users, the layout of the sterilisation centre will provide a satisfactory and safe working environment and a framework for a robust solution.
